Product Information

Henry Williamson's occasional contributions to the prestigious American literary magazine Atlantic Monthly are collected here for the first time: nature sketches, short stories and tales of his later experiences when farming in North Norfolk during the late 1930s and early 1940s. Central to the collection is 'Salar the Salmon', a condensed version of Williamson's best-selling 1935 novel.

Introduction by Richard Williamson, afterword by Anne Williamson, coloured frontispiece by Mick Loates, other illus. by C. F. Tunnicliffe, 251 print pages, Henry Williamson Society,2007 (out of print); e-book 2013

Henry Williamson (1895-1977), the nature writer and novelist, is best remembered today for his much-loved modern classic Tarka the Otter, although during his long life he wrote over 50 books and was a regular contributor to newspapers and magazines. The essays and stories collected in Atlantic Tales were published in the prestigious American literary journal Atlantic Monthly over the twenty-year period between 1927 and 1947. Introduced by his son Richard Williamson, Atlantic Tales comprises an anthology of the very best of Henry Williamson's writing, with examples of the nature sketches on which his early reputation was founded; short stories - from the light-hearted "Swagdagger Crosses a Field" to the moving "A Crown of Life", perhaps his best short story; tales of his children growing up in North Devon; and accounts of his later experiences reclaiming a derelict farm in North Norfolk during the late 1930s and farming in the early years of the Second World War. Central to the collection is the story of "Salar the Salmon", published over three issues of Atlantic Monthly in a condensed version of the bestselling novel, which successfully preserves the pulse and vitality of the original story.

Anne Williamson provides an informative overview of Henry Williamson's association with the Atlantic Monthly in her afterword.
