Henry Williamson (1895-1977), the nature writer and novelist, is best remembered today for his much-loved modern classic Tarka the Otter, although during his long life he wrote over 50 books and was a regular contributor to newspapers and magazines. The essays and stories collected in Atlantic Tales were published in the prestigious American literary journal Atlantic Monthly over the twenty-year period between 1927 and 1947. Introduced by his son Richard Williamson, Atlantic Tales comprises an anthology of the very best of Henry Williamson's writing, with examples of the nature sketches on which his early reputation was founded; short stories - from the light-hearted "Swagdagger Crosses a Field" to the moving "A Crown of Life", perhaps his best short story; tales of his children growing up in North Devon; and accounts of his later experiences reclaiming a derelict farm in North Norfolk during the late 1930s and farming in the early years of the Second World War.
