Programme

Friday, 6 October

  • 6.00 p.m. onwards: drinks in the bar followed by dinner in the restaurant. After dinner there will be a viewing of the film Tarka the Otter.

Saturday, 7 October

Breakfast in the restaurant.

  • 10.00 a.m.: Coach tour entitled 'Wandering with Tarka'.

Tarka's travels make an almost perfect figure of eight. Our tour will encompass the southern loop, starting and ending in Barnstaple in sight of the Long Bridge. In between we will stop at about ten particularly notable spots described by HW in the book. Most of these stops will be new sites not previously visited by the HWS, but of course one will be familiar – the iconic Canal Bridge. To keep an element of surprise, locations will not be revealed until arrival. Each stop will have an appropriate reading from the book.

  • 12.30 p.m.: Lunch at the 'Puffing Billy', originally the railway station for Torrington.

The day will be busy and involves getting on and off the coach several times. The planned schedule is tight and so time is of the essence. There is very little actual walking involved, but at one stop in particular there will be walking for a short distanceover rough ground.

  • 6.00 p.m. onwards: drinks in the bar followed by dinner in the restaurant.

  • 9.00 p.m.: 'How well do you know Tarka?'

A quiz based on the book hosted by your President, Richard Williamson. It will be something that you can all join in and enjoy, with amisture of hard and easy questions. (It might pay to re-read the book in advance . . . or, dare one whisper it, perhaps read it for the first time!) A small prize will be presented to the person with the most correct answers.

Sunday, 8 October

Breakfast in the restaurant.

  • 10.30 a.m.: Annual General Meeting in the Park Suite

  • 1.00 p.m.: Wreath-laying in Georgeham churchyard

Attendees might like to read Anne Williamson's consideration of Tarka the Otter in her 'A Life's Work' series.
